Stephen Pels ’09

Stephen Daniel Pels, affectionately known as Steve, passed away on June 20, 2023, in Grayling, Michigan.

Steve’s love for nature and the environment shaped his career as a fishing guide in northern Michigan. He was a man of action, preferring to express his love through deeds rather than words. From the age of five, Steve excelled in hockey and played the sport throughout his college years. He was also a talented cook, delighting family and friends with his culinary skills. Steve’s sensitive and giving spirit endeared him to all who knew him.

Steve had a fulfilling, intellectually and spiritually, educational experience at both Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, and then a B.S. degree in Geology & Environmental Science from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sarah Brokus ’09, his father, Daniel Pels, and his mother, Mary Pronoitis. His sister, Julia Pels, held a special place in his heart. Steve was also blessed with a close bond with his aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
