Maxine Greij

Maxine Kathryn Greij was born in Elliott, North Dakota on October 21, 1937 to Walter and Amelia McCann. She passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023, at the age of 85.

A strong woman with quiet wisdom, Maxine’s character was formed through taking on responsibilities on the childhood farm and home, and she excelled at bringing smiles to the faces of her friends with her ready wit and acts of service. She met her beloved husband Eldon, affectionately known as “Eldy”, while attending business college in Fargo, North Dakota. They married on May 29, 1960, and grew to a family of five. They were married for 61 beautiful years.

Both Maxine and Eldon carried out their careers at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, Eldon as a professor and Maxine at the Hope Geneva Book Store, eventually as office manager. Maxine was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker as well, providing a welcome center of gravity that drew people in. She treasured her family and friends and embraced every moment with them. Maxine loved best through acts of service – chocolate chip cookies were a particular treat for her children (and their college roommates). Her walk with God was quiet, but firm, and her insights and perspectives provided valuable counsel to her family and friends.

The passing of Eldon in 2021 was a terrible blow, but Maxine continued to bring smiles to those around her with her witty comments and pleasant disposition, making friends everywhere she went. Maxine was also preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and grandson Stevie. She is survived by her son Steve ’83 (Cheri), son Paul ’86 (Patty), daughter Laura ’91 (Kirk ’90), and grandchildren Peter, Maxine, Jennifer, Austin, Grant, Elliot, and Seth.

We take comfort in knowing that Maxine and Eldy are together again with their Heavenly Father.
