George Van Verst ’58

Dr. George Orthel Van Verst, 88, son of Katherine and Paul Van Verst, brother to David and Richard Van Verst, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, December 8th, 2023.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen Vugteveen (d. 2004) and survived by their children, Janet ’83 and Scott ’62 Van Verst, husband to Mary Vosteen. George is also survived by his wife of 17 years, Nancy Sutherland and his step-children, Michael Clevenger and Ami Fischer, wife of William Fischer, parents of Cameron Grace Fischer.

Born in 1935, George was a committed member of the Presbyterian church. He was a graduate of Oak Park High School, Hope College, and Loyola Dental School, and served in the Army for two years as a Dental Officer. He practiced dentistry in partnership with his brother Richard in Oak Park/River Forest for 36 years. Known for his unique character, sense of humor, and gift for storytelling, George’s pleasant and cheerful personality will be remembered and missed.
