Geraldine Scheerens ’48

Geraldine Hope (Gerry) Scheerens, 91, of Battle Creek, died October 4, 2018. Gerry was born June 24, 1927 in Rochester, NY to Jacob and Jenny (Cambier) Scheerens. She received her Master’s Degree in teaching at Hope College. Gerry taught in Venezuela for one year, a short time in South Haven and spent the majority of her career as a kindergarten teacher at Westlake Elementary School. Gerry enjoyed golfing, reading, and meeting 17 close friends every Monday. She was a member at the First Congregational Church, on its Library Committee and the Mary Daniels Circle. She was president of the Town Hall and on the Snap Board. Gerry is survived by her two nephews, Clark (Roxann) Scheerens of Columbus, OH and Larry Scheerens of Rochester, NY, a great-nephew, Tyler Jacob Scheerens. She is also survived her close friends the James Nelson family: Jim Nelson, Colleen (Winston) Parnell, Karen (Stuart) Noble, Kathy Davis, Matthew (Sally) Nelson and Connie (Jim) Hagood. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Milton, Marvin and Daniel Scheerens. She was also preceded in death by her best friend of 50 years, Gayla Nelson.
