Mary Oosting ’59 Hoffman

Mary Jane Hoffman was born in Dayton, Ohio, the oldest child of Melvin and Julia Oosting.

She attended Hope College and became a medical technologist. She served in the mission field in South India, working for the Reformed Church in America at the Scudder Memorial Hospital, where she was head of the hospital laboratory, modernizing testing equipment and training personnel in how to use it. She also worked as an emergency room medical technologist in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and in Greenville, South Carolina.

After retiring, she moved to Holland, Michigan, to be near family. She was a member of the Holland Gardening Club. She enjoyed gardening, animals, and singing in her church choir.

Mary is survived by children Janet (James) Kragt, Timothy (Jennifer) Hoffman, and Peter Hoffman; brother J. Thomas (Carole) Oosting; sister Elizabeth (Fred) Van Lente; sister-in-law Gayle Oosting; grandchildren Joshua Kragt, Jennifer Kragt, Jessica Kragt, Jonathan (Alyssa) Hoffman, Thomas Hoffman, Michael Hoffman, Katrina (Jonathan) Price, and Karla Hoffman; one great-grandchild, Jackson Price; many nephews and one niece; and great-nephews and -nieces. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex Hoffman, and her brother Timothy Oosting.
