Matthew Handzo ’00

HANDZO, MATTHEW SCOTT, ascended to be in his mother’s arms again July 17, 2020.

He was 42 years of age living in Savannah, Georgia. Born on November 4, 1977 in Rochester, Michigan to Richard and the Late Judy Handzo (nee Tazza); proud father of Isabelle; dearest brother of Derek (Erin) Handzo; loving uncle of Liam and Eva.

Although raised in Michigan, he called the south, specifically Hilton Head Island, home. Matt’s kind and selfless soul found the good in everyone. His beautiful smile, inherited from his mother Judy, always brought comfort for those who knew him. He thrived on meeting new people, good times, good music, and the warmth of the sun. During college, he was well known for his DJ talents. He had an innate ability to read the room to get everyone on the dance floor. He loved dogs, and beach volleyball; however, football was his passion.

He played football at De La Salle Collegiate High School where, in 2000, he was inducted into the Catholic High School League Hall of Fame. He continued his career at Hope College where he was the only player since 1955 to start all 36 games. He also earned 1st team all-league honors. After his highly successful playing career, he followed his passion into coaching football. As an offensive coordinator, his team set Division II offensive records.

Despite the on-field successes, having a positive impact on young athletes’ lives was far more important. He cared more about his players lives off the field than on it. He worked tirelessly to mentor his players for life after football. Matt was happiest helping others. He would go to any length to help even if it meant sacrificing himself. His warm heart will forever be deeply missed by his family, friends, Arcadian fraternity brothers, and countless athletes whom he touched throughout his career.
