Mary Ellen Weessies ’53 Overbeek

Mary Ellen Overbeek, formerly of Long Lake in Pavilion Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully May 16, 2023 at Oak Trace Lifespace Community in Downers Grove, Illinois. Mary Ellen was born on July 25, 1931 in Kalamazoo to Henry and Jennie Weessies. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and Hope College with a degree in education. While at Hope College, Mary Ellen was a member of the Hope College Women’s Glee Club and Chapel Choir. Mary Ellen taught second grade for over thirty years at Tobey School in Vicksburg Michigan, just down the road from her family home on Long Lake. When not working, Mary Ellen volunteered with variety of organizations. She was an active volunteer for the food pantry at Bethany Reformed Church, where she was also a long-time member and spent many years singing in the choir. She enjoyed spending time with her family, helping whenever needed.
On June 6, 1953 Mary Ellen married Donald Overbeek, who proceeded her in death shortly after celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. Surviving are their three children, Todd Overbeek of L’Anse, MI, Lori Overbeek of Kentwood, MI and Jill Sparacio of Downers Grove IL; three grandchildren, Aaron Overbeek, Jenna (Quinton) White and Timothy Sparacio; and four great grandchildren, Tyler Overbeek, Christian Overbeek, Sadie Olznoi and Brooks White. She was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law Robert Sparacio.
