Howard DeMaster ’48

Howard L. DeMaster, age 96 of Shawano, formerly of Breed, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at his home at The Cottages in Shawano. Howie was born on October 30, 1925 in Sheboygan County. He grew up in Cedar Grove, WI. He was a proud Navy veteran with lots of stories to tell. While in the Navy he attended Officer’s Training at Lawrence University. Later, Howie attended Hope College in Holland, MI where he earned his teaching degree. On December 28, 1946, Howard married Joan Berlin in Kohler, WI and they celebrated 74 years. Together, they had three children, six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Howie was a math teacher and guidance counselor in South Milwaukee for most of his working years. Howie and Joan retired early. They traveled, moved up North, and built a house in Breed. Howie sailed a boat, fished, tied fish lures, gardened, and volunteered. Most importantly, Howie loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed seeing his great-great-grandchildren grow. For many years, he was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Breed.

Howie and Joan moved to an apartment in Shawano and then to an apartment at The Cottages Assisted Living in Shawano. They both eventually moved to The Cottages Memory Care. Joan passed away in 2019, and Howie continued to call The Cottages Home.

He told everyone that he had a good life and a good family. Howie was a kind, generous, positive, grateful man. He will be missed.

Howard is survived by his 3 children, Kathy, Tim (Zoe) and Mike (Pam); 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
