John Winter ’57
John was born November 10, 1931 to Hartger and Katherine Winter in Allegan, Michigan. He graduated from Allegan High School in 1949 and from Hope College in 1957. John served from October 1952 to September 1954 in Korea in the U.S. Army. He married Emelyn Mae Curlee on June 7, 1958 in Dearborn, Michigan and together they had two children: Charles and Ellen. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trout fishing and hunting. His hobbies included woodworking and model railroading. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Model Railroad Historical Society for 50 years and volunteered at the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum’s library. John and Em loved their children and grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jurrien Winter. He is survived by his wife; son, Charles (Julia) Winter; daughter, Ellen Winter; grandchildren, Anne Klinke and Peter Winter. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 247 West Lovell Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service.
