Lorraine Hellenga ’60 Toji

Lorraine Hellenga ’60 Toji was a member of the chemistry faculty at Hope College from 1961-65.  In 1964 she received the prestigious Danforth Teacher Grant and took leave to begin her studies at Stanford University.  Following her marriage to Dr. Masuo Toji and the completion of her PhD in biochemical pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania, she joined the staff at Coriell Institute for Medical Research where, although officially retired in 2013, she continued to work part time as a human genetics scientist until the time of her death.  She was deeply involved with Ikebana International; and had returned from the International Conference in Japan just days before her death on May 5, 2017 in Woodbury, New Jersey.
