J. Dean Hogenboom ’56

J. Dean Hogenboom ’56 of Lombard, Illinois, formerly of Oak Park, Illinois, died on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023.  He was 89.

He was born on May 25, 1934, in Fairview, Illinois, to the Rev. Josh ’25 and Dena (Habink ’22) Hogenboom.  He graduated from Holland (Michigan) High School in 1952.

He majored in mathematics at Hope, where he was a member of the Cosmopolitan Fraternity (as had been his father before him).  He also completed a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Michigan in 1960.

He was a retired high school teacher.  He began his career teaching mathematics and physics in southeast Michigan.  He taught mathematics at Oak Park River Forest High School from 1965 until retiring in 1989.

He and his wife, Marion (Ellsworth), who survives him, were married on Aug. 22, 1959.  They were longtime members of First United Church of Oak Park.

In addition to Marion, survivors include their three children, Karen Hogenboom of Urbana, Illinois, Kathy ’85 (Greg ’87) Olgers of Holland, and Mark (Maryann) Hogenboom of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren, Eric (Elena Weinberg) Hogenboom, Alex Hogenboom, Kyle Hogenboom, David Olgers ’16 and Amy Olgers ’20; two sisters-in-law, Irene Hogenboom and Doris McCullagh; and seven nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Dana Hogenboom; his brother, the Rev. Kermit Hogenboom ’53; two brothers-in-law, Pat McCullagh and Byron Powers; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Powers.
