Frances VanLeeuwen ’47 Douma

Frances G. Douma, 98 of Holland, MI passed away on January 12, 2022, at Lakeside Vista in Holland.

Fran was born and raised in Holland, where she learned how to drive on a tractor, enjoyed playing softball, and was a Dutch Dancer at Tulip Time. She graduated from Holland High and Hope College with her Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching, and later her Master’s Degree from U of M.

While on furlough from WWll, Lester Douma walked into the Mary Jane Restaurant and caught Fran’s eye. They were married on December 26, 1946 and made their home in Holland.

Her career started in a one room country schoolhouse on East 24th Street in Holland, and then on to Special Education at Burton Elementary in Grand Rapids. She kept in touch with some of her students from 24th Street and Burton for many years.

Upon retirement, Fran and Les found their winter home at Lake Fairways

in N. Ft. Myers, FL. After Les passed, Fran made Ft. Myers her home until 2017.

She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. A dedicated teacher and Avon lady, who enjoyed her cars. She enjoyed planning parties at home, school, and Lake Fairways. She loved to have fun!

She is survived by her daughter Tammy Douma and husband Terry Schumaker, grandchildren; Amanda and Ty Mierendorf, Alex Schumaker, great-grandson Nash, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
