Warren Van Kampen ’69

Warren Bruce VanKampen, born May 16, 1947, died peacefully at his home in Saugatuck on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

His parents Warren and Ruth Van Kampen preceded him in death.

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Lisa Johnson and her husband Michael, Jackie Rivas and her husband Shawn; grandchildren Kirstie Shashaguay, Ben Shashaguay, Ayla Dejong, Jake Dejong, Olivia VanKampen, and Will Soule: sisters, Sandra Van Howe, Debora and Tim Locker: his grandfather’s wife, Lorayne Van Kampen: as well as many close nieces and nephews.

Bruce was a proud graduate of West Ottawa High School and Hope College. From there he went on to get his Master’s in Education from Northern Michigan University. He loved his first teaching job at an Indian Reservation in New Mexico. He also enjoyed his time teaching at Covert Elementary School until his early retirement.

After retirement, he was blessed to have over 20 years to devote to the pursuit of raising his grandchildren and will always be remembered for his untiring devotion and unconditional love. His family always teased him for being a bit rough around the edges but below the surface was a heart of gold. Grandpa Bruce was always available and ready to help, a true father figure to all.

Throughout his life, hunting, fishing and camping trips with his family and friends were a great source of enjoyment. He also enjoyed reading, jogging, naps, playing cards with friends, spending time with his dogs, but most of all, he loved taking care of his grandchildren.

His ability to live simply and in the moment was much appreciated by all he touched. He cherished every day and would often say what a wonderful life he had. His influence was great and his love and wisdom strong.
