LaVerne Lampen ’56

Laverne Lampen, age 89, of Holland passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019.

Laverne is survived by his wife, Esther, of 62 years; his children and grandchildren: Lowell and Trudy Lampen (Duffy, Meggi and George) of Wisconsin, Andrea Ivarsson (Gunnar and Oskar) of California, honorary daughter Leslie Lampen of Holland; brother: Neil and Marilyn Lampen; brothers-in-law: William (Mary) Plumert Jr., and Raymond (Linda) Plumert.

Laverne served in the United States Army in active duty during the Korean War. After his time in the service, he graduated from Hope College with a B.A. and Michigan State Universitywith an M.A. and an Ed.S. During his career, he taught in Godwin Heights High School, served as elementary Principal in Perry, MI and later served as Principal of Zeeland High School. He continued his career as Superintendent of Portland Public Schools and Negaunee Public Schools in Michigan. Following his retirement from Michigan Public Schools, he was Headmaster at Spanish River Christian School in Boca Raton, FL.

Laverne was a member of Harlem Reformed Church, in Holland, MI.

He also was a member of the Zeeland American Legion and the Lions Club.
