Harold Cupery ’52

Cupery, Harold & Verna 1/19/2018 Kalamazoo Harold S. (age 87) and Verna J. (age 86) Cupery went to be with their Lord on January 19, 2018. Both were born near Friesland, WI and graduated from Cambria High School. After graduating from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary, Harold was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church of America. He and Verna began their ministry of more than 60 years in Eddyville, IA before being called to Community Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Their next call brought them to Bethel Reformed Church in Kalamazoo, MI where they served for 28 years. They continued their ministry through pastoral care at Prairie Edge CRC in Portage, MI for ten years. Amazing Grace. Harold and Verna were a beautiful couple, for whom family, friends, community, and faith were central to their lives. Lives that conveyed love to each other, their family, and all with whom they were connected. Love that was warm, resilient, enduring, unconditional, and forever growing. Love was central to their values, their charity to others, their sacrifices, their care for the environment, and for those less fortunate. Their passion for music was deep-seated, often erupting into song during casual conversations. Their wit and humor was uplifting and contagious. This is our inheritance, treasure that matters, that is everlasting and can be taken everywhere and shared with everyone. At the end of each phone call Harold would sign off with “goodbye for now.” Yes, goodbye for now. Harold and Verna are survived by their 3 children and their spouses, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren; Steven Cupery (wife Lorna Young, daughter Devon); Kathleen Nemeth (husband Roger, daughter Kristen Vashaw (husband Cecil, daughters Hillari and Hannah), and daughter Angela Day (husband Joseph, sons Nicholas and Luke); Dennis Cupery (wife Mary and children Timothy, Sarah Ottley (husband Graham and son Owen), David, and Stephen.
