Jon Burg ’73

Jon Lewis Burg, 70, of Benton Harbor passed away Aug. 19, 2021, at Spectrum Health Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Jon was born July 13, 1951 in Detroit, to Gerald and Mildred (Beaudette) Burg.

He lived most of his life in Benton Harbor graduating from Benton Harbor High School in 1969. He continued his education earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Hope College.

Jon was an independent businessman. He owned the Sea Chest, a nautical gift shop in downtown St. Joseph for many years. He was a school bus driver for Benton Harbor Area Schools for more than 10 years. His love of woodworking led him into the business of making toys for children. He fabricated small parts for antique Jeeps and sold them over the internet.

Jon enjoyed making beeswax candles. He delivered meals for the food pantry for many years. He loved to sail on Lake Michigan, ride trains especially going out west, traveling to Beaver Island, and cheering for the University of Michigan football team.

Jon is survived by his son, Kevin Burg; his brother, Gerald (Pam) Burg of Adrian, Mich., nephew, Jason (Victoria) Burg; niece, Erin (Marc) Benassi; and ex-wife, Kim (Shaun) Jackson.
