David Bast ’88

David John Bast, aged 55, of Holland, MI, passed away from cancer on July 8, 2021.

He was born on April 9, 1966 in Orange City, Iowa to Robert and Janet (Wessels) Bast. His family moved to Chicago and then Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1984. He graduated from Hope College in 1988 and lived in Holland, MI. David was preceded in death by his father Robert Bast in 1992 and his father-in-law Richard Weisiger in 2020. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Diana (Weisiger) Bast, children Katherine (Matt) of Chicago, IL, Daniel (Julia) of Grand Rapids, MI, and William of Holland. His mother Janet (Paul) Elzinga, and siblings Robert (Sarah) of Knoxville, TN, Cathleen (Taylor) Holbrook of Hopewell Junction, NY, Michael (Cheryl) of Rockville, MD, and Carol (Philip) Tyler of Hollis, NH also survive him as well as Diana’s mother Janet Weisiger, and siblings Glenn (Stephanie) Weisiger, Carin (Kurt) Arvidson, and Beth (Bruce) Lomnitzer as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.

David was hired by the Holland Public Schools in 1990 to teach 5th grade. With a growing interest in technology, David later earned his Masters Degree in Educational Technology, with a Library Science endorsement. For 28 years, David continued to teach for Holland Public Schools in a variety of roles. He will be remembered for his patience, kindness and great sense of humor.
