Ellen Kulp ’69 Buchanan

Ellen Kulp ’69 Buchanan died on July 11, 2018, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ellen was born on April 22, 1947 in New Jersey to Helen and J. Laurence Kulp. Growing up, she lived in Demarest, NJ and Ridgewood, NJ, and spent a year in Oxford, UK. In her youth, Ellen was an accomplished violinist, and performed with the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra. She graduated from Hope College in 1969 and then went on to receive her MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital. Ellen served as Assistant Professor, Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School, specializing in addiction medicine. Her students and patients greatly appreciated her thoughtful and compassionate approach, evidenced by her winning several “Teacher of the Year” awards during her tenure. Ellen loved to read and was a dedicated learner throughout her life. Preceded in death by her daughter, Sara. Survived by her son, Philip; siblings, Elizabeth, John and James; grandson, Rory; and many nieces and nephews.
