Norman Davis ’45

Norman Davis ’45 of Jamestown, New York,
died on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017 at UPMC Chautauqua WCA. He was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Frewsburg, the son of Hollis J. and Mary Thompson Davis. He was a Frewsburg High School alumnus and was a graduate of Hope College, a graduate of University of Michigan Medical School, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha society. He served his ophthalmology residency at Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he met his future wife Jean Girton. They were married June 12, 1949. War-time needs took him into the US Army. He was assigned to the Logistical Command of the Korean Conflict at 382nd General Hospital of Kanaoka Bar-racks, Japan. He was allowed to have his family join him. His son William was born in Osaka General Hospital. After serving his seventh year in the military at Fort Riley, Kansas, then a Major, he resigned to start his ophthalmology practice in Jamestown. He very much enjoyed caring for and chatting with his patients. Gardening, model engines, reading, the many niceties of nature and his family were among his interests. He kept daily diary notes for most of his adult-hood. He is survived by a daughter, Norma Jean D. Murray, MD (Brian) of Wyckoff, N.J.; a son Hollis F. Davis of Florence, KY; and a son William N. Davis of Jamestown, N.Y. Grandchildren are Capt. B. Patrick Murray (Dorothy) of Newnan, GA, Megan Murray of Philadelphia, Sean and Matthew Murray of New York City; and greatgrandchildren, Annie and Nathan Murray of Newnan, GA. Also surviving is a sister, Marian L. Folker of Mariposa, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jean Girton Davis, who died Dec. 13, 2014; brothers: Vincent T., Donald H., and Homer F. Davis; and a sister Mildred Davis Myers. At his request no calling hours will be observed. His body was be donated to the Department of Anatomical Science, University of Buffalo School of Medicine. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg.
