Mildred Timmer ’43 Van Oostenburg

Mildred Timmer ’43 Van Oostenburg, born Sept. 10, 1921, of Grandville, passed away on Aug. 10, 2016.

Mildred is preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Gordon Leon Van Oostenburg ’46; her first daughter, Lynn Frances Van Oostenburg; her parents, Bert and Frances Timmer; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Willem and Lena Van Oostenburg; her older brother, J. Norman (Barbara Dee) Timmer ‘38; and her younger brother, Harris B. Timmer ‘50. She is survived by her loving children, Mark (Julie Marcellus ‘75) Van Oostenburg ‘72, Mavis Van Oostenburg ‘76 (Jim) Bottenhorn, Paul (Margaret) Van Oostenburg ‘78 and Phil (Jill) Van Oostenburg ‘84, brother, Harris’ widow Hazel Christians; grandchildren, Julia E. (Robert) Bowen, Peter J. Bottenhorn, David J. Bottenhorn, Matthew L. Van Oostenburg ’10, Max P. Van Oostenburg, Dana K. Van Oostenburg, Faye E. (Jordan) Owen, Elizabeth G. Van Oostenburg, Sophie S. Van Oostenburg, and Madelyn J. Van Oostenburg; and great grandsons, Nathaniel S. Bowen and Ethan J. Bowen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred graduated from Hope College in 1943 and began working as an elementary school teacher in the Grand Rapids and Holland Public Schools until her fiancé returned from serving the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater.  With her husband of 45 years, she then served Reformed Church of America Churches in New Era, Midland Park, N.J.; Grand Rapids, Holland and Lynden, Washington.
