Jean Snow ’49 Bloemendaal

Jean Snow ’49 Bloemendaal of Athens, Georgia, died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family, on July 26, 2016 at the age of 89.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred Curtis Snow ’35 and Esther Leone Mac Farlane ’41 Snow and her sister, Janet Snow ’49 Pontier.

She is survived by her husband, John Bloemendaal ’64; her children; Robert Lubbers (Lucy) of Carrollton, Georgia, Richard Lubbers (Tammy) of Holland, Michigan, Margaret (Peggy) Lubbers ’78 Quesada (Sergio) of Athens, Georgia; her brothers, Curtis Snow ’45 of Baltimore, Maryland and Robert Snow ’49 (Rita) of Holland, Michigan; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a graduate of Holland High School and Hope College of Holland, Michigan, and an elementary school teacher in both Silver Spring, Maryland and for the West Ottawa Public Schools in Holland, Michigan until her retirement in 1985. In retirement, she taught part-time for Washington County Community College at the pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Indian Reservation in Eastport, Maine and at the University of Maine in Machias.

She loved learning and teaching and was a lifelong musician, singing and directing church choirs wherever she lived.  She served as president of the Pembroke Community Consolidated School District for many years. She was a generous contributor to many charities and educational funds and was instrumental in establishing a scholarship fund for students in the medical profession through Eastport Health Care, Inc. She was a longstanding member of PEO, which she joined in 1958.  She loved sailing, music, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.
