Samuel Cox ’85
Morton Samuel Cox lll, 61, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 02, 2024.
Sam was born to Mort and Mary Sue Cox on November 16,1962 in Ann Arbor where he and his siblings were raised. Sam obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hope College in Holland, Michigan and started his career as an Ophthalmic Angiographer for the Associated Retinal Consultants at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital working alongside his namesake and father, Morton Samuel Cox, Jr., MD. After several years, Sam decided to follow his passion for woodworking. This led him to Furniture Design and Woodworking at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. His passion grew and he honed his skills further studying under John Makepeace at Parnham College in Dorset, England. Upon his return to the states, Sam found his home outside of Ann Arbor where he worked for himself creating beautiful pieces of furniture. Those who own one of Sam’s furniture pieces are truly lucky.
Sam loved nature and as a child would fill his pockets with creatures as he explored the fields with his dog Barnaby. Fishing held a special place in his heart. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends fly fishing at Teton Valley Lodge on the Snake River, solo kayaking in Charlevoix and trips to Lake Superior where he handed down this passion to his nephew Sam. Sam was also a natural athlete. A hockey player in his younger years and gymnast in high school, he was known to make memorable athletic feats, especially in fun family activities. He also loved music and listened with a critical ear separating the sounds of each instrument with his headphones and favorite songs on repeat. Repeat, he loved music.
Sam will be remembered as one of the kindest souls you ever met. He was perceptive, witty and connected with people in a genuine way that was unforgettable. Everyone would always remember meeting Sam. He loved his friends and family deeply.
Sam is survived by his dear mother, Mary Sue Cox; his adoring siblings, Je? Cox and Lisa (Dan) Byrne; his loving nephews and niece, Sam (Kathrynn Udell) Byrne, Jack (Anna Schueler) Byrne, and Mary Kate Byrne; and many cherished extended family and friends.
Sam is preceded in death by his father, Morton Samuel Cox, Jr. MD. He is also reunited with his beloved four-legged furry companions, Kaigo, Satch, Grayson, Barnaby and his cat named Dog.
