Melchior Van Hattem ’59
Reverend Melchior Henry Van Hattem, of Wanaque, NJ on May 22, 2024. He was pastor of the Ho-Ho-Kus Community Church for 27 years, Chaplain of the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department and Ambulance Corps for many years, and served on the Public Assistance Board for 21 years. He also served NJ Churches in Harrington Park, Pompton Lakes, North Bergen, Kinnelon, Paterson and Jersey City, and in New York, the Bethany Memorial Reformed Church in Manhattan, and Clarksville, NY Community Church. He was President of the Bergen County Council of Churches 1982-84, the MetroJersey Classis 1969-70 and the Paramus Classis 1984-86. Mel was a graduate of Hope College and Western Seminary in Holland, MI and received a Th.M from Princeton Seminary. He served as a Christian Minister for 57 years since 1962. He is survived by his wife Irene, children Matthew and Melynda (Scott) Whitnall, sisters Virginia Wallis and Beryl Stall and brother -in-law Raymond Kostanty. A funeral service will be celebrated Tuesday, May 28th at 10 am at the Community Church of Ho-Ho-Kus. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 26th from 5-7 pm and Monday, May 27th from 1-3 and 5-7 at the C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, Ridgewood. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Community Church of Ho-Ho-Kus, or other churches he served in his memory would be appreciated.
