Matthew Hinzmann ’06
Matthew Allen Hinzmann passed away on March 7, 2024, at the age of 41. Born July 13, 1982, Matt’s life was one characterized by his adventures, humor, friendliness, and the interesting tales that made every encounter with him memorable. His sudden departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy is one of camaraderie and love. Matt was the beloved son of Barbara and Harry Hinzmann, a cherished brother to Luke (Lesley) Hinzmann, and a doting father to his son, Ethan Jakobcic. His role as a father was one that Matt wore like a badge of honor. It was Matt’s privilege to co-parent with Katie (Cullen) Kronemeyer, whom he held in such high esteem. As an uncle, Matt was always ready to share a laugh or wrestle with his niece and nephews: Elijah, Josiah, Hannah, and Isaiah Hinzmann. He will be missed by his grandmother, Virginia Cook, along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Educated at Hope College, Matt delved into the world of Communications and Business Administration, a field that perfectly suited his outgoing personality and strategic thinking. His professional journey was marked by dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic, as he honed his expertise in sales and insurance. Matt’s interests were as diverse as they were engaging. An avid fly fisherman, he found peace and solace in the tranquility of nature, often recounting his adventures by the water with a vividness that made you feel as if you were there beside him. He enjoyed spending time on the lakes and beaches of Michigan with his many friends, and his culinary skills, particularly his smoked meats, were legendary. An athlete at heart, Matt’s competitive spirit found its outlet in both playing and watching sports. But his greatest pride was found in his role as a father. He would light up while talking about Ethan’s latest achievements, whether it was in academics, sports, or the arts. His son’s artwork held a place of honor in his home, and Matt’s stories of fatherhood were always filled with pride and love. Matt’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit remains alive in the memories, stories, and love that will endure forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
