J. Robert Flier ’69

Robert Flier was born on July 8, 1947 at 9:30 A.M. in Hawthorne, New Jersey. He was the only child of John Flier and Bella Cornelia Ruitenberg.
As a youngster, he worked with his father on the milk route which gave him the chance to drive his first vehicle, a 1951 Divco milk truck, on country roads near the dairy, when he was nine years old. After the family moved to Ocean Grove, New Jersey, he worked at the Main Ave. Deli.
Bob attended Lincoln Elementary School and Hawthorne and Neptune High Schools, all in New Jersey. After High School, he received his B.A. at Hope College and his M. Div. (Master of Divinity) at Western Theological Seminary, both in Holland, Michigan. He was ordained an elder in the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
While at college, he was introduced by his roommate’s girlfriend to her sister, Janet. They dated through the college years and on June 19, 1971, they were married in Detroit, Michigan. Their son, John, was born on August 17, 1983.
Bob served churches in West Coxsackie, New York; Olathe, Paonia, Genoa, Last Chance, Commerce City and Wray, Colorado and Sundance, Wyoming.
Bob also worked with Olinger Mortuaries.
Bob enjoyed many hobbies, including collecting coins and stamps, fishing and hunting, treasure hunting and bird watching.
