David Van Dyke ’60
David Henry Van Dyke, age 85, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024. He was born in East Grand Rapids on August 11, 1938 to Gilbert and Irene Van Dyke, educated at Hope College and the University of Michigan, and earned a medical degree in neurology. His residency training took place at the University of Michigan and at The Peter Bent Brigham Boston Children’s Hospital. He was a medical school faculty member at the University of Rochester, the University of Nebraska, and at Michigan State University. David was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Koopman Van Dyke. They were married for 58 years, and their legacy continues with their son, John Van Dyke (Nicole), their grandson, David, brother-in-law, the Rev. Leroy Koopman, and nieces and nephews. In recent years, David’s beloved companion has been Marianne Gritter. David was an amateur musician, avid reader, and an active member at Central Reformed Church (10 College Ave NE). As a committed Christian, David wholeheartedly believed that “I am not my own, but belong-body and soul, in life and in death-to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ” (Heidelberg Catechism 1).
