Gordon MacKay ’61

Gordon MacKay, Hope College class of 1961 passed away on May 1, 2019, in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Gordon was born on July 8, 1938 in Elmhurst, New York to Malcolm and Margaret MacKay. Following graduation from Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, New York, he enrolled in Hope College graduating with a degree in Education. He returned to New York where he worked for over thirty years as a public-school teacher, specializing in world and American history. Gordon was beloved by his students and made life-long friends in the classroom. He was frequently invited to the weddings of students, some who had graduated over a decade earlier.

Gordon was a world traveler who made many trips to his beloved Scotland. He was especially knowledgeable about 19thCentury Great Britain and the monarchy. Following retirement, Gordon moved to Virginia. Gordon is survived by his older brother David of Dunnellon, Florida.
