He attended Hope College where he was a star basketball player, and later attended Elkhart University where he became a dental lab technician. He opened his Wiersma Dental Laboratory in 1967 on the Southeast side of Grand Rapids where he worked until his death. Anyone who knew Darryl knew his love for University of Michigan. You could never avoid his his wit, especially his ( sometimes very lengthy) wonderful jokes and stories about the past, but they were always entertaining. He always had a smile and made friends easily. He was loved by everyone. Darryl loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, especially at his cottage on Little Placid Lake in Newaygo County. He will be sorely missed (at the poker table there) and in our hearts and lives In lieu of flowers, the family ask to donate to one of the charities close to Darryl’s heart St. Jude’s Hospital, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in memory of his son Matthew Wiersma.
