Jack Millard ’61

The Rev. Jack H. Millard, age 83 of Zeeland, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022 at American House of Holland with his wife June (Veldheer) at his side. Jack was born in Plainfield, New Jersey March 22, 1938 to Arthur and Dorothy (Bird) Millard. He attended Rutgers University for 2 years, transferring to Hope College, Holland from where he graduated in 1961. He graduated from New Brunswick Seminary (NY) in 1964 with a BD and Masters of Divinity. Jack was married to Donna Burggraaff who died in 2003. They served the Fonda Reformed Church until 1976 and Johnstown Reformed Church, both in New York. He retired in 2004 after serving there for 28 years. Jack had a servant’s heart, not only for church, but also for the community. While in New York he served as an EMT on the Fonda and Johnstown Volunteer Ambulance Department, also as president and Corp Chaplain of both. He was a chaplain for the Johnstown Fire Department for 20 years and the Johnstown Police Department for 11 years. He received the Liberty Bell award and the PTA award for his community service. He was an eagle scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He taught many classes in First Aid for the American Red Cross, and was also a certified New York State Track and Field Official for 29 years for track meets in Johnstown, NJ. Jack served terms as Vice President and President of Synod of Albany, President of the Classis Schoharie, and assistant Clerk of Classis for 25 years. He also enjoyed being a member of the FJG Square Dance Club and Fonda Men’s Bowling League. After moving to Zeeland, MI, Jack married June (Veldheer) on October 15, 2005. They had met while both were students at Hope College.

Jack owned a family cottage on the Jersey shore, which we decided to sell/give to Hope College with an annuity coming to us. The cottage had many happy memories for Jack as he grew up and as a vacation spot during his career in upstate New York. Upon his retirement and move to Michigan Jack and June became active members at Christ Memorial Reformed Church. He was a calling pastor, First -Aid Responder, Outdoor Greeter, and Angel Food volunteer, among other things. His sense of humor became his trademark in greeting people. Both of them volunteered at the Community Action House noon luncheon at Western Seminary for many years.

Jack and June enjoyed her large family gatherings at Christmas and other holidays, as well as breakfast in Zeeland twice a week.

A special treat for Jack in the summer was to return to New York to preach at the Caroga Lake Chapel which is just inside the Adirondack National Park. It was also a good time to visit with his family and many church friends in the area.

Jack was loved and will be missed by many, many people.
