Richard Glerum ’49

Richard Z. Glerum Richard Z. Glerum, age 95, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the New York State Veterans’ home in Oxford NY. At his request there will be no funeral service.

Richard was born in 1925 at Rochester NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Milton and Lucille (Zimmer) Glerum, his wife Frances Root Glerum and a brother, Robert Glerum. He is survived by daughter Mary F. Green (Carl) of Nichols, NY, son David R. Glerum (Margaret Ann) of Tallahassee, FL., grandsons Derek Green (Alecia), Christopher Green (Maria), David Glerum (Bridget), Daniel Glerum, granddaughter Andrea Haus, a great granddaughter and a niece.

Richard was a graduate of Monroe High School, Rochester NY, Hope College, Holland Michigan and the University of Rochester. He retired after a lifetime career in education. He served as a guidance counselor, teacher, and director of pupil services and testing at several community colleges. He always enjoyed the beauty of the Finger Lakes region. In his younger years he and wife Frances enjoyed time in their cruiser on Seneca Lake. He was a member of the Rochester flying club and took his family on flying trips in a Cessna airplane. His favorite pastime was reading the newspaper.

We will miss his quick wit. We are proud of his service to our country beginning at age 18. He was inspired to enlist after listening to the account of the Pearl Harbor attack on the radio. Richard was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was in the 391 Bomb Group flying in a B-26 Marauder as armorer-tail-gunner. The battles and campaigns he was involved in were Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He received the Air Medal American Service Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle East Service Medal and WW II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves for 12 years, obtaining the rank of Captain.
