Janet Koopman ’62 Van Dyke

Janet Elaine Van Dyke, age 80, a resident of Beacon Hill Retirement Community, Grand Rapids passed away at her home December 23, 2020. Janet was born May 2, 1940 in Willow Lake, South Dakota to the Reverend August Koopman and Jeanette Koopman, who both have preceded her in death.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hope College in 1962, she worked for several years in various college admissions departments. She then returned to the study of music, concentrating in the area of technical and artistic performance of the classical organ literature. She became the organist of many churches in the Grand Rapids area as well as in New York and Nebraska. A member of the American Guild of organists she was also an active member of Woodlawn Christian Reformed Church and most recently Central Reformed Church.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, David H. Van Dyke MD, her son John Schuiling Van Dyke and his wife Nicole, and her grandson David Norman Van Dyke all of Grand Rapids. Also surviving is her brother, the Reverend Leroy Koopman and his wife Marjorie of Holland, MI, a niece Laurie Duda of Rochester Hills MI, nephew Kendall Koopman of Dexter, MI and many friends in the Grand Rapids area.
