Alex Ebneth ’50

Alex Ebneth, 96 of Crossville, passed away at Good Samaritan Society of Fairfield Glade Dec. 21, 2020.

Alex was born in Catskill, NY, the son of Andrew and Johanna Ebneth. After completing high school in 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army. He completed basic training in upstate New York and was called to duty during World War II where he served his country stationed in France.

After the war’s end, and with his honorable discharge, he took the opportunity to further his education and enrolled in Hope College in Holland, MI, on the GI Bill. After getting his degree in elementary education in 1950 and his master’s degree from Butler University, he embarked on a 36-year teaching career in the Michigan school system.

He retired from teaching in 1986. In 1957, Alex married Betty Gierman, daughter of Russell and Ila Gierman of Utica, MI. For 30, years Betty worked and Alex taught school in the Detroit area until his retirement. After retirement Alex and Betty built a home and moved to Fairfield Glade in 1991. Retirement was filled with world travel and volunteer work with many charitable organizations. He was a longtime member of the Fairfield Glade Lions Club where he was voted “Lion of the Decade” in 2007. Alex and Betty were faithful members of the Fairfield Glade Community Church.

He is survived by a niece, Pamela Gierman Barber (Terry), a nephew, Ronald Gierman (Donna), and a great-nephew, Ryan, all of Macomb, MI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents, Andrew and Johanna Ebneth; and an older brother, Andrew.
