Dolores Freyling ’51 Hertel

Dolores Freyling Campbell Hertel, much loved wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma and friend was welcomed into heaven on January 9, 2019.

Dolores was born on October 24, 1929, in Holland, Michigan to Arend (Bub) and Hermina DeKoning Freyling. She grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and Hope College where she met her husband Gene C. Campbell. They were married for 38 years until Gene died in 1989.

Dee is survived by her loving husband James Hertel who cared for her faithfully for the last 25 years.

Dee lived a grace filled life of service to her family, church and community. Dee taught school at Burton Junior High in Grand Rapids.

She was president of the Grand Rapids Classis of Reformed Church Women, and was active in the Hope College Women’s League. Dee was an avid fan of Hope College basketball, a long-time member of HASP, P.E.O.

and a member of the Christ Memorial Sanctuary Choir for 28 joy-filled years.

Dolores took great joy in spending time with and caring for her family.

Dolores will be greatly missed by her children Claire and Bill Boersma of Holland, Nancy and Robert Post of Holland and Mary Sue and John Beuker of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Bryan (Melissa) Boersma, Rachel (Ross) Dieleman, David (Tara) Fisher Boersma, Brent (Caitlin) Boersma, Eric (Lisa) Post, Christie (Julian) Weidle, Kelly (Brad) Welsh, Elise (Matt) Pothoven, John Beuker, Katelyn (Joshua) Cain, Annie (Victor) Trinklein, Gene Beuker; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dolores is also survived by her nephew Edward Edelmayer, son of her brother Edward Freyling who died in 1954.

Dolores will also be missed by children: Jack and Debbie Hertel, Jane and Craig Cooper, Carol and Dick Dunning; grandchildren Jill ( Christian) Baker, Kate ( Mike) Cerny, David ( Suzanne) Cooper, Christy ( Steve) Lowe, Jimmy Hertel, Patty Hertel; and 10 great- grandchildren.
