Bruce Ming ’68

Bruce Jarvis Ming, 88, of Holland, died peacefully in his earthly home and was welcomed into his eternal home on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

He was born in Holland, Michigan on November 20, 1929, to Margaret (Kraai) and Oscar Jarvis Ming, who both preceded him in death. He was the youngest of three siblings and is survived by sister, Marlyn Kane and was preceded in death by eldest sister, Tommy Lou Mooi, and grandson, Jan Gregory Elenbaas.

Bruce was a member of the Holland High School graduating Class of 1947. Bruce married Karen Rose (Lam) and they recently enjoyed celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary. Bruce and Karen spent the majority of those years enjoying the home they had built on a 20-acre hobby farm in Overisel. After holding a variety of manufacturing jobs, Bruce decided he would like to become a teacher and enrolled in Hope College at the age of 33! While there, he played football and was on the track team. He graduated in 1968 and was employed by the West Ottawa public school system until his retirement. In addition to teaching, Bruce coached Wrestling. Bruce also received his Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University. His many and varied interests included singing, hunting and fishing, running, drawing, and enjoying nature. He was honored to be a Senior Olympian and carried the torchwhen the games were held in Holland.

He will be missed greatly by his wife, Karen; daughter, Jo-Ellen Ming and David Hering; daughter, Abbie-Jo and Ryan Wilcox; grandchildren, Jacob Jarvis Elenbaas, Adelyn Rose Wilcox, Annelle Marie Wilcox; and a greatgranddaughter, Rowan Angela Elenbaas. Bruce’s in-laws include Marilyn (Lam) Rynbrandt (deceased), Donald and Jean Lam, Judy (Lam) and Jim Ludens. Bruce’s cousins, nieces and nephews were dear to his heart and he enjoyed spending time with them.
