Sara Renkes ’84 Neevel

Sara Neevel, 55, of Zeeland, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, after a six-month battle with cancer.

Born in Morrison, Ill., to Phil and Alice (Maisie) Renkes, Sara graduated from Hope College, where she met her husband, Ken. She worked at Haworth for 20 years, and later for MacMillan Publishing, primarily on psychology textbooks with Dr. David Myers. Sara was previously a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Holland, and more recently became a founding member of Jamestown Harbor Church. Sara volunteered through Good Samaritan, Salvation Army, and led many mission trips. She was gentle, compassionate, kind, and eager to help others. Sara always encouraged her children and grandsons; was an avid supporter of the Cubs and Hope College basketball.

Sara is survived by her husband, Ken; children, Kelli (Steve) King, Alison Neevel; grandsons, Levi and Owen King; parents, Phil and Maisie Renkes; in-laws, Jim and Barbara Neevel; sister, Ann (Dave) Smazik, sister and brothers-in-law, Kay (Scott) Brown, John (Karen) Neevel and Jeff (Kelly) Neevel; as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Steve Renkes. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Fair Haven Ministries, 2900 Baldwin St. in Hudsonville, MI. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, at Fair Haven. Rev. Dr. Dennis Voskuil and Pastor Ben Peters will officiate.

Memorial contributions are to the RCA’s Disaster Response Fund or Jamestown Harbor Church Children’s Ministry. Arrangements are by Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home.
