David Woodcock ’58

David L. Woodcock passed on January 4, 2018, from old age. He was born to Ray and Pauline (Oakes) Woodcock on April 27, 1935. He attended Holy Family Grade School and St. Mary’s High School in Saginaw, MI. David graduated from St. Mary’s on June 6, 1953. While at St. Mary’s, he was a member of the 1953 Class C State Championship basketball team. He also participated in football and baseball. After graduation, he attended Tulsa University in Oklahoma where he played football. In 1955 he transferred to Hope College where he graduated in 1958. While there, he played football, basketball, and baseball. After graduation, in 1958, he married Parmelia Collins of Adrian. He then attended Western Michigan University where he received his teaching certificate. He then taught for the next 37 years. He taught at Romulus, Brown City, Port Huron Catholic, Flint Southwestern, Royal Oak Shrine, Detroit Catholic Central, Gaylord St. Mary’s, Belding, and Jenison. He taught social studies and coached most sports. Football was his first love which he coached for a total of 52 years continuing even after he stopped teaching. David received many honors. He was a member of the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Detroit Catholic Coaches Hall of Fame, the Port Huron Hall of Fame, the Shrine High School Hall of Fame, Jenison High School Hall of Fame, Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame. David also served as President of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. He received their highest honor, the Jim Crowley Award. He and his wife, Parm, also raised a family of five children: Lynne (Gerald), Susan, Charles (Kelley), Patricia(Brandon), and Michael (Jenni), grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Trevor, Jenna, Max, Jack, Mateo, and Emma; great-grandchild, Beckett, and all of whom survive him. He and Parm were married for 59 years. The last 11 years, they wintered in Florida. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7, 2018 1-3PM and 6-8PM with memories shared at 7 PM , at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building) 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI. Funeral service will be held at 10:30AM Monday, January 8, 2018 at St. Sebastian Church, 9408 Wilson Ave SW, Byron Center, 49315.
