Maurice Boon ’51

Maurice Boon ’51 age 90 of Grand Haven passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Moon was born June 1, 1926 to Dirk and Mary (Ruster) Boon in Grand Haven. After graduating from Grand Haven High School, Moon proudly served his country in the US Navy during WW II. He attended Hope College where he received his undergrad in education. He continued his education at Wayne State University receiving a master’s degree in education.

He married Marjorie A. DeNeut ’52 on June 30, 1956. Moon began his teaching career with Grand Haven Public Schools where he taught fifth and sixth grade for 37 years. He was a member of First Reformed Church and The American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. Moon enjoyed being “Mr. Mayor”, accompanying his wife, Mayor Marge to many events representing the city. He enjoyed taking part in the christening of Escanaba III in 1984 and also as the ship’s sponsor in 1987 when it visited the Port of Grand Haven. Moon enjoyed hunting in his earlier years. In later years he and Marge enjoyed traveling throughout the world. He loved to play golf with his friends and family members. He took countless rides through the countryside stopping often at farmer’s markets and roadside stands looking for the best deals on produce and flowers. Moon enjoyed going to the Casino and especially loved hitting the triple red 7’s.

Moon is survived by his daughters, Cristine ’79 (Marvin ’80) Hinga of Zeeland, Amy (Fred) Gadsby of Holland; son, Dennis (Kathy) Boon of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Eric, Melissa, Dirk, Alex and Ryon; brother-in-law Earl DeNeut; sister-in-law, Dorothy Boon; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge, brothers Richard Boon and Floyd Boon.
