Bernard D. Hakken Jr. ’50

Bernard D. Hakken Jr. ’50 age 89, went to be with his Lord, Saturday, December 24, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Elda Hakken and his brother, James Hakken ’51. Bernard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Donna  Hoogerhyde ’56 Hakken; his children, Ruth Hakken ’78 (Douglas) Roosien, John Hakken ’80, Daniel (Lynda Wesseldyke ’95) Hakken ’97, Timothy (Kellie) Hakken ’85, Mathew (Amy) Hakken, Mary (Seishi) Okamoto and Andrew (Cara Aprea ’90) Hakken ’90; his 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bernard was born in Bahrain, Arabia, to missionary parents.  He graduated from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary.  Bernard served in ministry for over 40 years; as a missionary in the Philippines and a pastor of churches in Muskegon (Forest Home Reformed), Grand Rapids (New Life Reformed), and Iowa (First Reformed of Sully).  Bernard served in the US Army.  He was a talented woodworker, building boats and various watercraft for his family to enjoy.  Hunting, fishing, snorkeling and camping were some other favorite hobbies.
