Susan Hinman ’00

CAPTAIN SUSAN E. HINMAN, DENTAL CORPS, U.S. NAVY 

Captain Hinman graduated from Hope College, Holland, MI in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. In 2004 she graduated from The University of Michigan School of Dentistry receiving a Doctorate of Dental Surgery and was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. 

Upon graduation from dental school she completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at the Naval Dental Center Parris Island, South Carolina. 

Her next assignment was on board the USS Abraham Lincoln, CVN-72, from July 2005-August 2007 where she earned the Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification. 

From 2007-2010 she was stationed with Naval Hospital Beaufort, working as a general dentist at Branch Health Clinic Dental, MCRD, Parris Island and the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. 

Captain Hinman completed residency training and received her Certificate in Endodontics from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland as well as earning a Master’s degree in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in July 2012. 

She served as a staff member in the endodontics department at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School from August 2012-2015. 

Captain Hinman was assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital Naples Italy in July 2015 and was appointed as the Director for Public Health from June 2016 through June 2018. 

Captain Hinman was stationed at Navy Medicine Readiness Training Command Great Lakes, Branch Dental Clinic Osborne as the Endodontic Division Officer from June 2018-June 2020. 

She is currently serving as the Director, Advanced Specialty Program in Endodontics for the Naval Postgraduate Dental School. She has distinguished herself as a patient safety champion by completing the Navy Medicine Quality and Safety Leadership Academy in April of 2019 and led the Dental Enterprise Patient Safety Implementation Phase 1: Leadership Working Group from May 2018- January 2019. 

Captain Hinman currently holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor at the Postgraduate Dental College of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. 

Captain Hinman’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), National Defense Service Ribbon, GWOT Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.
